Handmark Launches New On-Device App Store for WinMo

Handmark announced the launch of HandMarket Apps, a new application storefront for Windows Mobile smartphones. According to Handmark, HandMarket Apps features both free and premium applications, promising a simple, intuitive user interface and one-click access from the device homescreen. A navigation bar enables users to browse app inventory by featured, top and new products, along with integrated search functionality to find specific applications. HandMarket Apps also features detailed user reviews complete with a star-rating system, carrier billing and credit card payment, instant notifications when apps are updated and a personal locker that stores all downloads. HandMarket Apps is available now to Windows Mobile users in the U.S., although Handmark notes the store will soon expand internationally.

BlackBerry App World Upgraded to 1.1

RIM’s version of the Blackberry app store has been upgraded to version 1.1, and the bulk of the update concerns better navigation options — new categories, top downloads for free and premium apps, and the ability to sort search results by name, release date, rating, price, and developer.

This mobile client update includes:

Enhanced discovery

  • View the catalog by free vs. paid top downloads
  • Additional categories and sub-categories

Customers can sort their search results by:

  • Newest
  • Highest Rated
  • Price (lowest/highest)
  • Developer (alphabetical)
  • Application Name (alphabetical)
Archive apps: Customers can now archive their apps to SD Card or on-device storage memory and reinstall when they want to use them.

Samsung App Store is Opening to Developers

Samsung will open its Application Store for developers tomorrow. By using the new Application Seller website, developers will be able to publish Symbian and Windows Mobile apps to Samsung Application store. The website will allow developers to track sales records, revenue and rankings.


Verizon Plans to Launch an App Store This Year

Verizon Wireless plans to build its own app store and launch it by the end of the year.

Denny Strigl, Verizon’s president and operating chief, said on a conference call with analysts that the company will begin selling the Palm Pre early next year. Later this year, he said the company will offer a “refreshed” version of the BlackBerry Storm. He added that a Google-powered Android system “is on our roadmap.” John Killian, Verizon’s CFO, said that about 40% of Verizon’s new device sales were of smart phones and PDAs.
