Interesting view by “the appfarm” about the importance of lite versions in boosting application sales.

July 31, 2009

The blog – the appfarm, published an interesting observation about the importance of lite versions in boosting application sales.

Based on their experience with the iCombat application, they saw a conversion rate of about 8% (200k sales of paid apps vs 2.4 Million lite downloads), which, in fact, boosted the number of purchased application 5 times more than the previous month!

Their bottom-line “lessons-learned” were:

1. Should have released lite version from the beginning

2. Lite does NOT cannibalize sales

3. Get the bugs out for your lite release

4. Lite sales trail off too but paid sales remain higher

5. Frequent releases do juice downloads

I truly believe in this model, and think that this is an excellent way to “show-off” your product and expose it to potential buyers, with a relatively limited investment. People who tried the lite version and liked it, are more likely to buy the paid app, while keeping the application as a “paid only” release, significantly shrink the exposure of the app, thus reducing the probability to sell it. You really need to get to your potential customers before you can sell to them.

There’s a positioning debate whether to call it “standard” release and offer a “premium” one, or call it “lite” and propose to buy the “full feature” app. I am for the second option. To me, “premium” still gives an image of something that I don’t necessarily need, but if I have a “limited” version, I want to move to the “unlimited” one. But that’s philosophy…

Two days age, Microsoft announced that they are now accepting application submissions from 29 supported countries and have launched a Race to Market Challenge to kick off this activity. This offers yet another app-store by a major player in the market, and is another step in the increasing trend of Mobile App Stores, trying to follow the success of the Apple store.

Developers can submit applications to the Marketplace, where the Microsoft team will analyze them and certify the applications that meet the guidelines that were published at their site. As an incentive for developers, Microsoft launched a “Race to Market Challenge“, offering four Microsoft Surface Tables to the winners.

The Joint Innovation Lab (JIL)

July 29, 2009

Yesterday, at the VDC conference, Verizon Wireless announced their intention to open an App Store, where the developed applications will be based on the JIL standard.

The Joint Innovation Lab (JIL) was established on mid 2008 by three of the largest operators in the world –  China Mobile Limited, SOFTBANK and Vodafone, as a platform for developing mobile internet services. Verizon announced their intention to join the initiative a couple of months ago, and reaffirmed this intention yesterday.

These four giants plan to use the JIL as a platform “to develop mobile services and drive innovation and synergy in the industry to the benefit of their combined global customer base of 1 billion customers”.

This initiative is expected to enable different widgets and applications to run seamlessly on different handset platforms and operating systems – “develop once, run on all” – across different mobile operators, taking into considerations several aspects, like billing, security, privacy, etc.

At the moment, the JIL is offering a platform for developing mobile widgets (running on emulators only at this point), and encourage the developers community to create new applications and services, based on this new standard. For that, they offer to download the JIL SDK and emulator, and has several tutorials and samples.

The intentions are great, but at the moment, the main issue is the JIL complaint devices, which are still not available. The JIL team claims that “JIL plans to enable the widget runtime environment on key JIL-compliant devices….. We will be presenting full details on supported operating systems along with a handset roadmap this summer. ”
This is yet to be seen.
